Animals

The Augustów Forest is home to more than 2 thousand animal species (most of them being insects). It's a great place for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Among the most important species of birds and mammals that can be found in the Augustów forests, the following are definitely worth mentioning:

  • Red deer - characterized by large antlers, wild game

  • Roe deer - a mammal of the deer family, wild game

  • Moose - the largest living species of mammal of the deer family, distinguished by its characteristic antlers and extra long limbs. It inhabits forests and shrub wetlands, swamps, marshes and bogs.

  • Lynx - protected species of predatory feline. It is hard to find because they hunt at night.

  • Marten – a predator related to the weasel family. In the Augustów Forest you can meet a variety of forest martens and beech martens.

  • Beaver - a protected species of rodent of the beaver family. The symbol of Wigry National Park.

  • Wild boar - a large land mammal, wild game.

  • Black stork - a species of wading bird of the stork family, strictly protected

  • Bald Eagle – a strictly protected species of large bird of the prey Accipitridae family.

  • Osprey - a species of migratory bird of prey under strict protection.

  • Woodpecker - in the forest there are three types: the white-backed, the three-toed and green and gray. All species under strict protection.

  • Grouse - a large bird of the Phasianidae family, strictly protected. The mating areas are protected zones throughout the year up to a radius of 200 m

  • Black grouse – a strictly protected large bird of the Phasianidae family.

  • Crane - a large bird from the crane family, living on wetlands, peat bogs, and old river beds. It is under strict protection.
